Minister Eoe speaks against horrific killing

In a statement released on December 4th (yesterday), Minister Soroi Eoe said violence against women and girls is a grave violation of human rights and can be classified as a criminal offence based on the seriousness of the incident.

“But there is room to put an end if we all join our hands and voices together by addressing its root causes,” he stated.

“Violence against women has serious consequences for the perpetrators but it also negatively affects families, the community and country at large. Preventing these acts of violence against women can save lives and prevent human suffering.

“I join my colleague ministers in condemning the murder of Grace Gavera and convey my sincere condolences to her family.

“I call on the police and other relevant authorities to ensure the perpetrator is severely punished and make him an example to others who practice violence against women and girls.

“I appeal to the people of this nation, gender inequality is rife in our country thus we must address the root causes and have all members of society, including men and boys, recognise this and be educated to help prevent further acts of violence.

“Lastly, I want to appeal to all our women, girls and mothers in our beautiful country to come out and seek help as soon as possible from the relevant authorities, if you are a victim of domestic violence, and let the law take its due course.”
